Episode notes
Why do some young Americans care deeply about politics, then sit out elections? What happens when neither major party feels like it represents them? Josh Martens welcomes Alejandro Ramos, founder and executive director of the Ramos Research Institute, to examine the frustration behind youth voter disengagement.
Drawing on CIRCLE research and his conversations with young people, Alejandro discusses registration confusion, competing work demands, distrust, and the gap between posting online and participating in civic life. Josh challenges older generations to take housing costs, education costs, and Social Security seriously.
Together, they explore why dismissing those concerns can make socialism more appealing, why name-calling shuts down useful conversations, and how civic education can help people think independently. They also discuss third-party voting and Alejandro's expectations for the midterms before turning to Cuba.
With family still on the island, Alejandro explains his perspective, while Josh questions whether sanctions and military intervention can deliver the freedom Cubans deserve.
