Iran, Exile, and the Revolution That Betrayed a Generation w/ Yasmin Pacella || 1843
RUN TIME · 40:17
Episode notes
What happens when a generation demands change and ends up with less freedom? Iranian-born scholar and actor Yasmin Pacella joins Josh Martens to discuss life under Iran's Islamic regime, the personal cost of dissent, and the revolutionary promises her parents' generation came to regret.
Yasmin recounts being detained by the morality police, the everyday fear of being stopped over her clothing, and the unexpected freedom of simply riding a bicycle in Italy with the wind in her hair. She explains how studying abroad became life in exile as her public work made returning home unsafe.
The conversation explores her family's experience of the Iranian Revolution, how political trends draw people into movements, and why she challenges Western activists to test their ideals against lived experience. Josh and Yasmin also discuss communism, capitalism, academic conformity, and the danger of confusing opposition to an existing government with a guarantee of something better.
Finally, Yasmin shares her hopes for a free Iran: political choice, economic opportunity, international relationships, and room for ordinary people to build better lives.
