Elizabeth Warren, whose campaign is flailing about, trying to regain traction, is in the background screaming "Hey! Don't forget how Socialist I am!" Will it work?
Warren introduced a plan that would criminalize manipulation and disinformation online.
“Disinformation and online foreign interference erode our democracy, and Donald Trump has invited both,” Warren said, ostensibly referring to reports that Russia engaged in a misinformation campaign online ahead of the 2016 presidential elections. “Anyone who seeks to challenge and defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election must be fully prepared to take this on – and I’ve got a plan to do it.”
“I will push for new laws that impose tough civil and criminal penalties for knowingly disseminating this kind of information, which has the explicit purpose of undermining the basic right to vote,” she added in a press release titled “fighting digital disinformation.”
The plan, like most of Warren’s plans, is expansive, and involves forcing social media platforms like Facebook to “label” and approve content before its allowed to spread on social media — essentially giving them the editorial power of prior restraint on news organizations — and “create clear consequences” for any account that interferes with voting. She would also force Facebook, Twitter, Google, and other organziations to share their algorithm and allow users to opt-out of being targeted.
Most importantly, though, Warren would “push to create civil and criminal penalties for knowingly disseminating false information about when and how to vote in U.S. elections,” and put a national security expert in charge of sniffing out and punishing those who spread such information, essentially creating a national “bureau of truth.”
The problem with leaving the government to regulate information online, is that you never know who will be in control of the government. The other problem, is that you will never be able to politically define "Truth."
Let's discuss the "truth."
Warren is fond of using all the typical leftist talking points. Climate Change, reasons behind the wealth gap, Medicare for All, you get the idea.
For example, Warren cites a statistic that America's billionaires pay a lower tax rate than the "working class." (As if Billionaires don't work).
This statistic has been grossly manipulated. First off, it didn't take into account the Earned Income Tax Credit, or the Child Tax Credit. So if you paid 20% in taxes throughout the year, and then received all of that money back in a tax refund, you were still counted as paying 20% in taxes. Even if you paid absolutely no money in taxes.
Therefore, you could easily say that Elizabeth Warren is spreading manipulated information.
Warren states that Medicare for All is the best way to provide high-quality Healthcare to everyone in America. Of course, I'm lacking any evidence that the Government provides things at a higher quality than the private sector. Disinformation? No, because she gets to decide what is "truth."
How many news stories did I see that Donald Trump conspired with Russia to win the election? I'm assuming Elizabeth Warren would want those posts blocked, or the writers prosecuted?
Warrens "Bureau of Truth."
First, it's laughable that the US Government would have such a bureau. My first task for that bureau is to investigate about 1,000 Government agencies for constant lies.
Next, answer this for me Democrats. Will you trust that same Government bureau the next time a Republican is in control of the White House? What will you do when that bureau decides that your wealth and income stories are packed full of manipulated data?
The fact is, you can't give power to the Government, if you wouldn't be comfortable with the other party having that control.
